hello parents and welcome to the every school safe training module the LA unified blueprint for safety reminds us that we committed to providing every student preschool through adult and all members of her district and school communities with a safe healthy welcoming and respectful learning and working environment today we are going to spend some time talking about men Suicide Prevention and the importance of getting help at the end of the presentation we will have an opportunity to review resources and discuss how to get help for your child the objectives for the lesson include the following what about the warning signs and risk factors of Youth suicide game tips on conversation skills for how to have a conversation with your child if they approach you to disclose concerns about suicide for themselves or a friend and identify appropriate persons at your child's school and resources in your community to reach out to for support this lesson serves as a companion to presentations that all students will be receiving as well you have a child in elementary school they will be reviewing a presentation titled our feelings matter this lesson incorporates a video with an animated character named rocket and discusses how our brain controls what we think how we feel and why Sea-Doo the video highlights that we all have different feelings and it's okay to feel our feelings students learn various coping skills to deal with big feelings and discuss how students can get help from a trusted. the presentation provides opportunities to pause the video to allow students to engage in activities and discuss what they learned to check for understanding if you have a child and middle or High School these students will engage presentation titled see something say something in this presentation students will learn the three steps of the say something program while watching a video from Sandy Hook promise called say something prevents suicide the three steps are see something how to recognize the warning signs and threats of suicide and harm act the importance of acting immediately and taking all signs and threats seriously and say something went to say something and tell a trusted adult if they see or learn about something that is concerning students will discuss what it means to be a student of standard and learn tips on how to start a conversation with a trusted adult if they a concern about themselves or a friend the presentation concludes with an overview of various resources that they can reach out to for support before we move on let's start by discussing Mental Health what does at the house mean to you thank you for participating mental health includes our emotional psychological and social well-being and affects how we think how we feel and how we Act mental health influences how we handle stress how we relate to others and what choices we make mental health is important at every stage of life from childhood to adulthood and ranges on it can you I'm from well-being to mental illness we may fluctuate between the two depending on certain life events and stressors that we experience if untreated mental health issues can potentially lead to suicidal ideation or behavior suicide is an increasingly serious issue facing youth today from the Centers for Disease Control indicates that youth rates of suicidal thoughts and attempts are on the right as parents you play a v role in the safety and well-being of your children today's lesson is intended to empower you to learn the risk factors and warning signs of suicide as well as what steps to take to safeguard and support your child today's lesson includes video created by Sandy Hook promise a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th 2012 and I have promised created the life-saving evidence-informed know the signs violence prevention programs to teach the warning signs of someone who may be in crisis socially isolated or at risk of hurting themselves or others how to get help this video by Sandy Hook promise is titled say something prevents suicide it will provide important information about how you as a parent or caregiver can prevent youth suicide and feel calm in your role as a trusted adult the say something program involves three key steps see something or recognize the warning signs and threat act immediately and take it seriously and say something as he watched the video take note of things that stand out to you or something new you learned we will have a moment after the video to engage in discussion hello and welcome to the stay something prevents suicide parent training my name is Alex French from Sandy Hook promise I've worked in school-based mental health for years train students in schools across the country in their role and violence prevention today we will talk through some information on youth suicide as well as some tips to handle a conversation with your child that will support you in your role as best adult our hope is that you will be participating in this training as a team a team can be someone you co-parent with other adult members of your family or other parents in your community a team-based approach laws for cohesive discussions and strategies on what to do if your child comes to you expressing suicidal ideation if you notice that your child is displaying warning signs of suicide this training is designed companion to the student training video that your child may be viewing in school if you have not already done so please pause this video and watch the student video it will provide you with some additional information about you suicide as well as in Urdu you to the three steps of say something as you watch the video we will have a worksheet for you and your team to complete please take a moment to ensure you have it accessible and ready to fill out as we go this video and worksheets should take you approximately 15 minutes to complete we encourage you to take additional time as a staff to come together and discuss how best to support the students in your school and Community suicide is a grave issue facing today's youth it is the second leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24 years old more than the next nine leading causes of death combined in addition to being one of the chief causes of death for teens rates of Hoth who is Asian for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts are on the rise since 2007 annual hospital visits for children aged five to 18 have nearly doubled from 580,000 1.12 million more than 40% of those visits are children aged 5 to 12 these statistics in addition to those cited in the student training highlight how crucial it is that we adults do what we can to prevent more young lives from being lost to suicide we can do this by using the same steps in the student program look for warning signs and threats act immediately and take it seriously and say something for parents Guardians and family we need to identify the correct person in our community to approach with concerns of our own or those of your child this could either be reaching out to your school counseling staff contact a healthcare professional particularly someone in mental health or using nationally available no-cost hotlines we'll talk more at length later in this video about how to access these resources in the first step of the student video we discussed several of the warning signs that a young person displays when thinking about taking their own life let's revisit them quickly the warning signs of suicide and use our someone is talking about wanting to die be dad or talking about suicide someone is talking about cutting or burning themselves someone seems like they're really hurting and feels like things won't get better someone is struggling to deal with a big loss in their life someone has with Ron or pull away from everyone and everything someone has become more worried on edge or seems unusually angry or your gut is telling you to be worried because someone just doesn't seem like themselves warning signs are an indication that someone is experiencing Suicidal Thoughts risk factors are life events or situations that might contribute to a young person experiencing suicidal ideation as we discussed in the handbook you may have all of these risk factors and never experienced suicidal thoughts or they may have none of these and think about suicide having thoughts of suicide or history of suicide attempts engaging in non-suicidal injury such as cutting dealing with depression anxiety or severe emotional distress abusing alcohol or drugs experiencing Prejudice discrimination or pressure to be someone they're not having a aggressive behavior severe conduct problems or illegal behaviors having access to lethal means such as firearms these risk factors are important to keep in mind as we keep an eye out for warning sign suicide however these are guidelines a teen may show warning signs despite having all or none of these risk factors once you've noticed any of the warning signs of suicide whether your Chow is high or low risk the second step is to act immediately and take it seriously at this point your child might come to you but it's likely that you may have to reach out to them to have the conversation or go directly to any physical or mental health professional being a trusted adult can come with a lot of pressure to do it right this feeling can be magnified when you're talking about something as sensitive as suicide it's keep in mind that by listening and being there for your child you are already doing a world of good the critical step for you is to get help for your team from the appropriate professional in your community simply by doing that you are doing the right thing talking about suicide is by no means easy we're going to give you some tips to keep in mind if you are child comes to you to discuss concerns about suicide for themselves your friend as you have the talk keep in mind there is no such thing as a perfect conversation we're all human the most important thing you can do is take those worry seriously and proceed to the appropriate great professional to procure help for your team and support for you at this time with your group please complete the worksheet section titled having the conversation it will help you remember these tips in the moment are tips are take a deep breath and calm and even breathing and tone of voice these will help your child stay calm and be able to open up and have the conversation listen sure to give them plenty of time to speak this is not easy for them either they may need time to think of answers to your questions do your best not to feel that silence or put words in your mouth if you feel the need to speak through silence grab a drink of water it will create a natural barrier and give them time to speak if your child is coming to you sharing concerns about a friend or classmate it's important that you thank them for coming to you and work with them to I'm sure the information goes to the right place like that Young Person's parent or the school counselor even if your child is concerned that their friend will be mad keeping their friend alive is more important than hurt feelings if your child is coming to you expressing their own suicidal ideation there are a couple of additional tips you can ask directly if they are thinking about killing themselves this will not put the idea in their head if they I'm not currently thinking about suicide it is important to use the term killing yourself as hurting yourself might mean very different things to a young person in crisis it's crucial to be direct if your child does tell you they're thinking about suicide do not leave them alone it is crucial that you stay with them until you were able to get them help or until help arrives to you in the next section we're going to talk about what that help might look like now that we talked about how to act immediately and take it seriously let's talk about who you should say something to in order to get the help you and your child need during the student video we encourage them to say something to a trusted adult but who's your trusted adult as a parent or Guardian it's now time to fill out the second section of the worksheet titled next steps to say something with your group everyone's answers might be a little different but that's okay you can discuss and bring storm to come up with unique resources available in your community in addition to the ones you might normally use as we talked about these points of contact please make sure to write down their phone numbers so you know how to get ahold of them as soon as you need them this might seem unnecessary you can always look it up on your phone but in a crisis situation even the most straightforward information can be hard to access or recall your trusted adult could be someone in your child it offers Mental Health Services or works in the counseling office you can find contact information on your school's website your family doctor what's their phone number and address a local metal the agency if you don't know of any local mental health agencies the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or Samsung has a resource finder available at find treatment. Samsa. / locator a no-cost support hotline these resources can be used by your child or by you as I mentioned these are not easy conversations to have if you need some extra support you can get help by calling the National Suicide Lifeline at one eight hundred two seven three eight two five five or by texting the crisis text line at 741741 we incur to familiarize yourself with crisis resources and hotlines available at your local County and state level as well as these National Life lies in text lines save those numbers in your phone so you can easily access them if you or your child needs them take a moment as a group to discuss what you will do if you have to leave your house or go with your child when they're in crisis who do you call to keep an eye on things at the house will you have a keyword to use on the phone to indicate an emergency and need a support what will that word be who in your neighborhood will be available during different times of the day for child care in case of an emergency if you were completing this training on your own could you to reach out to neighbors with Children of a similar age to form a support system should an emergency arise thank you for your time and work during this training as a parent you are a critical piece of the solution and preventing youth suicide today you learned to apply the three steps of say something prevents suicide you learn the warning signs of Youth suicide and gained additional information about risk factors you learn how to act immediately and take it seriously learn some tips on having the conversation with your child if they're struggling and you learn how to find the adult that you should say something to please keep the worksheets you completed today for future reference recovery is possible for young people who are experiencing suicidal ideation most people who make a suicide attempt serious enough for hospitalization go on to never make an attempt again as a trusted adult you can how save a life what else can you do you can get involved and play a Hands-On role in making your community a better place become a promise leader and help bring Sandy Hook promise is life-saving programs to your schools and community thank you for taking your time to learn this important information that can help prevent suicide what stood out for you in the video Let's pause here and open up for discussion great conversation thank you for sharing the important information you learn from the video we realized there was a lot of important information shared and want to make sure that you have something to remember the steps and warning signs as well as helpful phone numbers you should have a handout that looks like this titled trusted adult we also want to let you know that during the student presentations mentioned earlier we shared this time. Was students titled student upstander is there an upstander is someone who speaks up and takes action to help someone else now let's talk about the supports available to you and your child the Say Something video mentioned several sources of support or trusted adults that you could reach out and say something to if you have a concern about your child or another students safety some of those resources are at your child's school and summer in the community think about who you could go to for help at your trial school who are some of the trusted adult that could support in addressing your concerned thank you as some of you mentioned School supports may include the Isabel assistant principal a school counselor the school nurse social worker or PSW the pupil services and attendance counselor or Pasa or the school psychologist you also the option of contacting the LAUSD student and Family Wellness hotline for support the student and Family Wellness hotline is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 213 to 41 3840 some additional resources may include reaching out to your family doctor or pediatrician or contacting a local mental health agency there are several 24/7 no-cost hotlines that can be accessed well the numbers are here on the screen as well as on your hand out thank you for taking the time to participate in the training today and for taking an active role in the safety of your child remember if you see something take it seriously and say something you could save a life
